HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN PERSONAL SPACE

Everyone needs a space to call their own, no matter how in sync you are in relating with the people around you, there are times you just want to withdraw into your own zone, so that you can focus, produce and be a better living for yourself and those around you. That is why you need to create your own personal space.

While some people can concentrate virtually anywhere, this is, they carry their own personal space around like a snail carries it shell, for some it’s difficult. For those who cannot focus everywhere, it is good to create your own personal space.

why personal space?

Privacy and quiet are important in increasing productivity, especially if writing is your lifestyle or you seem to conduct a lot of your business over the phone or work with people. This is basically, whatever kind of person you are; a personal time will definitely increase your productivity.

Growing up in a home where personal space was on the premium list; all five girls in a room, we actually did come to blows for space. Then again staying in the boarding house all through school, it was a lot of efforts to create ones personal space and have others respect it. So people often tried to encroach my personal space, but it was never a feeling to get used to. And that is not just me but every human being I believe.

Personal space is important because it influences focus and efficiency, a place marked out for you such that others do not turn to trespass. People respect your own space and you respect theirs in return. No matter how little it may be.

ways to create space

Adapting space

So, your home is so limited in space and you just keep waiting for the time you will become of age and move to your own apartment or when you and your family can afford a new apartment. Then you will make things organized and create your own work space. As it is, you don’t have to wait that long and waste your precious productive time.

No matter how tight in terms of space the interior of a place may be, it can accommodate a small personal area. In situations where the interior space is limited, you have to make do with the amount of space available.

While sharing rooms with my sisters, even the bed, we shared. So, I decided to use a table and a chair to create my own personal space. I made my sticky notes and pasted them in the wall there, and how much I kept it organized in that corner of the room made everyone to respect it.

In adapting space, you don’t have to build a complete new wall but you can make use of room dividing materials like blinds, screens, standing shelves, paper or roller blinds . You can also use curtains to section out an area such that when you draw it from one end to the other, its gives you the required privacy and everyone is able to recognize without questioning.

It does not necessary have to be some permanent structure of demarcation , it could be creating texture and colour in contrast of the rest of the surrounding. I shared a bed with my elder sister and what she would do after dressing the whole bed is, she would cover her own side with a very soft white mantel, and once this is done, consciously or subconsciously I would never roll to that side. She made her own personal space in the bed we slept.

when you have a roommate:

If you have limited space, maybe you have a roommate; you can use a sofa-bed. Or a bed you can fold away during the day and bring it back at night. This will allow you room to create a work space during the day.

Architectural space

an unused part of the home basement cleaned up to create space

Hold on let me explain this architectural space to you. Let’s say a house with a store, a house with an extremely large wardrobe space or maybe an unused cellar or basement. Oh! You haven’t thought of it yet? I am here to open your eyes to it.

If you have a room that is used chiefly for storage, you can remove clutter and make your own personal space where you can read, write or exercises; especially if you like exercising in private like me. A room can be used for two purposes as long as it does not have human interference.

The process of dividing the space would require much more material since the space is large here. If the ceiling is high, you can use the divider horizontally to minimize material usage.

Other ways you can create your own personal space can be by activity. Such as using head phones or using ear plugs. This also helps to keep noise and distraction a way.

These are all fantastic ways to create your own space! I completely agree with you, we all need our own space. Especially if you’re working on something, or just need some personal time. I think there’s just something about making even just a little space, just for you, that can make you feel more relaxed and productive.

These are awesome tips, I’ve honestly been waiting to get a new home just to have space to call my own. You helped me realized that is unnecessary when you can just carve out space now in my current home with my family and let them know this area is my personal space for me to think, get creative, or even read. Thanks!
